Question 22: Are there things which can be useful without being in the exclusive possession of the user?
[35] Ghant: Yes, there are many things which are extremely valuable, even when not owned exclusively by the user. The most basic is air, no one can own it, but it is absolutely necessary to survival, just as food is. Another example would be property held in common by a community, such as our national parks. Information is a good example of something that gains value when shared with others, especially in areas of research such as the medical or similar fields.
Hans: Ok. But don't call them valuable. For Marx, “value” has a very specific meaning.
