Question 69: Explain better what I meant by the sentence: “Under capitalism, labor has social significance only as abstract labor.”
[107] Hans: Social significance of abstract labor   At the beginning of [100], Reidar gives a good definition of abstract and concrete labor. Then he continues:
Abstract labor is the only labor significant to societies because regardless of what use is given to an object to make it a commodity, only abstract labor, or the mental and physical usage of an individual's abilities are left remaining in the commodity.
This is a little circular. It is like saying: this person is rich because he has big houses and nice cars, instead of saying: this person is rich because he is exploiting many workers. You also seem to say that abstract labor is significant for all kinds of societies. It is only significant for societies which have commodity production.
