[12] Hans: Being a Commodity is not an afterthought In message [10], TOAD wrote that a commodity is something “produced
with the satisfaction of a human need in mind” which is then sold or
exchanged. This is not quite Marx's definition. Marx stresses that
the commodity is produced for the purpose of exchange. Since nothing
can be exchanged which does not also satisfy a human need, this means
that the commodity must also satisfy a human need. But the original
purpose, that what counts for the producer, is the exchange. Just
look around you at the commodities in the store shelves, and you will
see what I mean. |
