Question 81: What is the most simple expression of the value of a commodity, and what is the most “dazzling,” commonly known expression of the value of a commodity?
[161] Dunny: value of a commodity   What is the most simple expression of the value of a commodity, and what is the most “dazzling,” commonly known expression of the value of a commodity?
The most simple expression of a commodity is the expression that you obtain by relating one commodity to another. It is not as simple as merely looking at the cost in and of itself. There needs to be some kind of a comparison but at the same time needs to contrast one another. The financial comparison or strictly speaking the money form comparisons of commodities is not the best route. Marx describes this money comparison as “dazzling” or “blinding”. It makes it easier to look past the real value of a commodity. The price does not necessarily tell you the amount of labor used to produce the product of the differing values or use-values that it contains. The simplest expression therefore lies within comparing the values of commodities one with another and not just individually.
Hans: I like your independent thinking. You cannot expect to get everything right the first time, but this is much better than just regurgitating Marx's formulations.
