This question <18|28> overall <18|20> Hans: <16|23>.
Question 40: Reproduce, in your own words, Marx's rebuttal that, despite the arguments asked for to in Question 37, exchange value seems to be something inherent to the commodity after all.
[19] Hans: Read the Question!   VanHalen's [18] is a valiant attempt to give some logical arguments why value is something inherent in commodities, i.e., in favor of an objective rather than subjective value theory. His answer is, briefly: it seems commodities have a value, otherwise people would not bother producing them.
This was not at all what was asked in Question 40. The Question was to reproduce Marx's argument with your own words, i.e., to read and try to understand what Marx had written, and explain it in a language that is more accessible than Marx's. I do want you to read the text in this class!
Now since VanHalen tried to do it from scratch, without consulting Marx, the question arises how his results compare with Marx's. And there is one interesting similarity in VanHalen's method and Marx's method. Right now I will not say more about it, but will leave it up to you if you see what I mean. It may be helpful to go to class tonight because I will describe Marx's method in class. Question 40 is from now on no longer a trial Question but is added to the assigned Questions for the upcoming week. I.e., if you want to try to answer my Question what the similarities with Marx are, this counts as your assignment for the second week, together with Questions 51-77.
VanHalen: Prof. Ehrbar - Just for your information, I did read the text, two times in fact and tried to consult Marx for my interpretation. In your analysis you said that my answer was “doing it from scratch.” That seems a pretty quick judgement for someone who is entirely new to Marx, who tried their best to interpret the question and interpret the text from which the answer was to come from. I put a lot of though into the question. To say that my answer was doing it from scratch was almost an insult. I didn't write to complain like a baby but just for your information I tried the best I could and thought I was answering the question. pseudonym VanHalen - Derek Ward
