[95] Rambis: Carrier relationship to source Marx states that use value is the carrier of exchange value, but
as use value is not dependent on exchange value and yet exchange value is
non-existent without use value, use value cannot then be considered the
source of exchange value and use value and exchange value are not
interchangeable terms. In simpler terms, the sun and the light that it
emits can be considered the carrier of “daytime”, but the sun is not
intrinsicly dependent on daytime, yet daytime doesn't have expression
without the sun (near the poles during seasonal periods of prolonged
darkness, “daytime” exists because people are up and around and about
their work, but “daytime” as it is perceived and conveyed in the mind is
not fully expressed). The sun is not considered the source of daytime, and
sun or sunlight and daytime are certainly not interchangeable terms although
there is an obvious relationship between the two. The same is true of
the relationship between basketball equipment (basketball, backboard and
rim) and the game of basketball. The equipment can be considered the
carrier of the game itself, but is not the source of the game in the same
sense that the sun is not the source of daytime. Without the equipment,
the game does not exist, but the equipment does not depend on the game in
the same way that the sun does not depend on daytime. |
