Question 145: Which two steps in the analysis of value did Aristotle make correctly, and which step did he not make?
[172-13] Geo: Aristotle made two good points about value, according to Marx. First, the value of an object is no different in money than it is compared to another object or commodity. Second, this comparison is only good when the commodities have some sort of qualitative element or set-worth that makes them exchangable. Aristotle left out one key factor of value, the labor value of a commodity. Aristotle did this because the ancient Greek society had slave labor. Making the commodities, according to Marx, valueless. A commodity is only worth the labor put into it.
Hans: In class you wrote that slave labor makes commodities valueless because slave labor is unpaid. I have to say two things about this:
  (1) Slave labor is not entirely unpaid; the slave master must feed the slaves.
  (2) You are arguing that labor creates value because it is getting paid. This is wrong. The value the laborer creates is independent of his pay, it is usually much bigger than the pay.
