Question 65: Is it a character flaw to be lazy in an exploitive system?
[30] KnotKarlmarKs: Value-Added Labor Any system in which the worker does not receive value equal to the value he infuses into his product could be labeled exploitative. If the worker is lazy, he does not regain any of the value that is lost or stolen. In fact, if by lazy we mean that the worker will spend more time to add the same amount of value, or spend more time to add less value (than a comparable non-lazy worker) then the worker has lost value due to inefficient use of personal resources.
As to whether or not it is a character flaw to waste personal resources, I would say that it is in a producing society. However, if the worker has no other flaws, then he will add value equal in all other respects to that added by any other worker. It is also possible that his labor will be indistinguishable from any other labor, or specifically indistinguishable from the labor of a non-lazy worker. If the end user, or consumer, is only interested in the value or utility of the product then laziness is only ‘bad’ for the worker.
In a capitalist society, laziness would be harmful to more than the worker, even if he was devoid of other flaws. The worker whether exploited or not is working against all the costs incurred by the employer (whether himself or someone else). The worker's productivity will be equated against the cost of having him/her work there, and laziness will definitely be an issue.
