Question 77: Give other examples where the same thing has two different effects, and see if you can identify two different properties which are responsible for these different effects.
[43] Brooklyn: The Double Character of Labor Represented in Commodities   The only activity that I can think of, that can have different effects, is driving a car. By this, I can see that driving carries different characteristics with it, such as being stressful, as well as being a release of stress. With this in mind, I think that Marx is exploring the principle of labor, in a sense as to what extent it can be taken to. Obviously, if one merely does labor because one is forced to, the individual will only work to the extent of producing (if anything at best) a use value of a commodity. However, if one indeed does work with vigor and interest of a job, I think this is where the second character of labor is evoked, value. The same principle can be applied to driving. Driving can be simply utilized as a mode of locomotion and transportation, which in most cases, it can be mundane and stressful. But, if driving can be taken as a more interesting task, one can transform this “mundane” task into a more enterprising venture, such as professional driving, limo driver, etc.
