Question 150: How is the opposition of use value and value in the commodity expressed, made evident, in the Simple form of value?
[54] Fisherman: Opposition of use-value and value   When looking at the common substance that manifests itself in commodities, we see that value is common to all of them; while use value can be seen as completely independent. That is, when a commodity is exchanged, the exchange value can represent itself as something that is independent of its use value. We also see that if there is no utility involved it has no value. If what we have is useless, everything that went into this is useless and therfore creates no value.
Commodities all have a common form of value, but they are represented with many different ways in their use value. The point that Marx is trying to drive across is that the simplest value relation is that one commodity may have no value to one person, but may have a value of a different kind to another person.
