Question 187: How does Marx's use of the term “fetishism” compare with its modern dictionary definition?
[92] Cleo: In the eyes of Marx, and his believers, fetishism is something that can and should be avoided if handled properly. A fetishism is not merely a property of a commodity, but rather a false interpretation. Members withen capitalist society, often display acts of fetishism, which if can be avoided would be an asset to ones character. Most people in society feel pleasure and enjoyment from watching others suffer. Or rather, they feel greater pleasure in their accomplishments, when they have afirmation that they have surpassed the status of an equal. Additionally, individuals often see joy in the failure of their superiors or their enemy. As Marx see it, one must work extremely hard to avoid falling into the trap of fetishism.
For example, in Marx's society, where all labor is equal, it is extremely important for one not to attempt to brag that you have a nicer house or car than your supposed equal, as that would be against the beliefs of the political economy. As a result of trying to gain powers that they have not rightfully owned or gained fairly, individuals usually get themselves drawn into situations and problems that make them worse off than when they stared at point A. If one is smart, they will keep to themselves, work socially to benefit society, and not try endlessly to gain the feeling and status that they are better than their neighbor.
On the other hand, a fetish accoding to Marriam Webster, is an object or feeling that is absoutley necessary in order to go on with daily life. It is an extravagant irrational devotion that one poses on another person or another thing. One is pathologically immersed in the idea that object or person is an absolute necessity in order to go on and accomplish the tasks of everyday life. Such a person displaying acts of fetishism, according to Marriam Webster, believes that their object or obsession has magical powers and will protect them.
However, according to Marx, the idea of fetishism, is something that should be avoided. The thing that is accomplished is the creation of problems. It disrupts the even flow of society and makes one corrupt.
