Question 68: Is it a character flaw to be lazy in an exploitive system?
[48] Oak: Ah, the exploited lazy!   I actually lost sleep thinking about my response last night as it didn't seem right. But now that I find I have misunderstood the question, I'd like to offer an additional point. I believe Marx puts more blame on the system that allows people “misbehave” than on the people. If someone is being exploited, the natural response would be to react negatively and do as little as possible in return for the exploitation. It's not a character flaw, simply a natural reaction. People who don't feel they are getting their fair return will slow down to a level that will equal the reward. The danger is if they slow down too much in a capitalist system, they run the risk of losing their work altogether. Marx would argue, I think, that the people are exploited by this system because they need their jobs and must put up with the exploitation to keep food on the table.
Hans: I considered this when I gave you your grade for [43]
