| This question <112|112> overall <80|82> GDA: <58|292-8>. |
Question 116: Why can commodities not express their values in their own use-values? (Note that we are not asking here why the value of a commodity is not determined by its use-value. The expression of value is not the same as the determination of value.)
[81] GDA: Express their own use value? Say what? Marx says “use-value becomes a reality only by use of comsumption.” Meaning use-value is only realized when the commodity is consumed/used. If the commodity is never used or exchanged, then it would never have a use-value. In Marx's model use-values are items of utility and utility cannot be quantified.
Therefore the utility of a commodity has no exchange value and cannot express its own use-value.
Hans: You answered a different question than what was asked.
GDA: How so?
Hans: I was hoping you would re-read the question and figure that out yourself.
GDA: I did read it. I thought I was answering the right one. I guess I didn't. :(
