This question <15|15> overall <12|14> Toby: <557-8|18>.
Exam Question 6: What is a commodity? Marx does not give the definition of a commodity but an analysis. How would you define the thing he analyzes? (The answer can be given in one sentence.)
[13] Toby: Marx's analysis of a commodity is very open to anything “produced for sale or exchange.” Personally I tend to think of a commodity as a finished good available for purchase. Marx's definition is too general for me, by supposing a commodity can be any good “raw or finished.”
Hans: Good question. Scientific definitions are not arbitrary but depend on the character of the things defined.
