Question 555: What is wrong with the argument that the economic self-interest of the capitalists themselves will see to it that they treat their workers well?
[560-5] Blacksun: This argument is bogus, because capitalists can easily replace workers that they drive into the ground. The only restrictions capitalists have on how hard they work their laborers are the legal regulations, and the fact that if they work them too hard, they will go somewhere else.
The truth about capitalism is that the more value they can extract from their laborers at a lower price, the more they stand to gain. Just as a lazy worker works only hard enough not to get fired, capitalists treat employees only well enough for them to keep working.
Hans: I like your comparison of the capitalist with the lazy worker.
