Question 555: What is wrong with the argument that the economic self-interest of the capitalists themselves will see to it that they treat their workers well?
[561-3] Weasel: It is not in the economic self interest of the capitalist to treat their workers well. Marx believes that the capitalist takes the most advantage of their workers in order to maximize their profits. The overworked die off quickly and are replaced with a new worker, with no change in productivity (Annotations, 393). All the capitalist needs to do is offer an acceptable job so that they will not lose workers to another competing capitalist.
