Question 555: What is wrong with the argument that the economic self-interest of the capitalists themselves will see to it that they treat their workers well?
[563-14] TheDude: It is obviously not in the economic self-interest of capitalists to treat their workers well. A worker over a period of time during the work week slowly becomes less and less productive until they are to the point that what they produce equals their pay. It is at this time in the economic self-interest of the capitalist to allow the worker to be done for the week. This could occur at 50, 60, 70 hours for the week, it is variable depending on the worker's skill level. It is most beneficial for the capitalist to work the workers until wages paid equal production. This is obviously not beneficial to the worker.
Hans: Interesing theory of exploitation and of the length of the workday. But this has nothing to do with Marxism.
