| [72] Isaak: According to Marx the general form of value can only arise when joint work established by all commodities is established. A world community of commodities is looked to be established and boarders by social existences and social relations. This means that eventually everything must have a value in order for commodities to fully utilize their worth. These implications of this are serious because Marx is saying that eventually everything will have some sort of monetary value and its value will be based around the social majority. This becomes a problem when taking into account Plato's “tyranny of the majority” theory which states that people are foolish and not to be trusted in great numbers. |
| Hans: You are right that capitalist commodity production has the tendency to expand and to wipe out pre-capitalist modes of production, and you are also right that this expansion of the market is often greeted with suspicion. Not because of the tyranny of the majority, but because market relations are difficult to control, and they put those with few resources at the mercy of those with many resources. But neither of these two things has to do with question 203. |
