Question 90: Is it a character flaw to be lazy in an exploitive system?
[43] Shelley: In terms of an exploitive system I have to agree with ADHH [2005fa:99]. Because of a person knowing or feeling that they have no other options for advancement, then it is just a natural response to this situation. I wouldn't call it a character flaw, even if he could produce more. This natural response depends on the individual and what they value. Some individuals believe in putting forth effort even knowing they will never advance. Each individual carries with them a set of ethics they tend to live by. For example, the individual who puts forth the extra effort feels better about himself if he works as hard as he can. This does not mean he carries a character flaw or is any better than the individual that chooses to produce at a minimal level, vice versa. Now, individuals may be judged by this but this is only other people's opinion. If their opinions lead to an individual to fail, it is only because of how the individual responds to daily life situations.
Hans: By calling it a “natural response” you are making it easier for the person responding this way to defend himself or herself if confronted by an outraged capitalist who thinks it is his right to own his employees.
