Question 90: Is it a character flaw to be lazy in an exploitive system?
[57] Aytch: I believe that it is a character flaw for someone to be lazy on the “production line” no matter what system is in place. Regardless of the system it is important for the person producing the “labor” to understand that his time is being used for the benefit of others. If that person is not producing at least the average of “social labor” than he is costing not only the company “utility” but his actions will affect those people who rely upon the product that he makes.
While I can understand the argument that is put forth from Shelly [43] based on the fact that if a person has no motivation through means of advancement then what is the purpose? I believe that one of the things that Marx is arguing against is the “I” factor. Would Marx not argue that there is more involved in the production of products and commodities than “what is in it for me?”. According to Marx we should be thinking of the society as a whole as we produce these products, therefore the drive for advancement should not be the only thing that motivates us at work.
